Upon arriving at Changi Airport, I spent a few hours exploring the adjacent complex known as Jewel; a rainforest, botanical garden, luxury retail experience, and theme park all woven into one. The architecture was extraordinary (see attached photo). I happened upon a flower exhibition and design competition, and later enjoyed lunch on the top floor, which offered sweeping views of the interior canopy and waterfall centerpiece.
Singapore is a dream for American travelers. English is one of four official languages and is the primary language used in professional and governmental contexts. The population speaks at a native level, making communication seamless. Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil are also widely spoken, giving the city a distinctly international feeling. U.S. passport holders receive a 90-day visa on arrival and an effortless entry process.
The city felt almost futuristic: highly advanced and immaculately clean. Its urban planning and landscape architecture are exceptional, with greenery integrated everywhere. Having lived on Palm Beach Island for many years, I am no stranger to manicured spaces, but this was next level. While Singapore is an island nation with its share of waterfront activities, I opted to focus on the urban experience; cafés, design-forward neighborhoods, and dining experiences.
I was fortunate to stay at the St. Regis Singapore, and was flattered when the hotel shared my Instagram stories. A close friend of mine, a connoisseur of fine properties, often praises the St. Regis in New York City, so when it appeared among the options here, I didn’t hesitate. The experience delivered exactly what I’d hoped for: understated elegance, attentive service, and a refined blend of modern luxury with classic appeal. You’ll feel genuinely cared for.
Dining in Singapore is both abundant and elevated. Whether you're seeking a Michelin-starred tasting menu with skyline views or a bold reinterpretation of Asian street food, the city delivers. The Singapore dollar is slightly weaker than the U.S. dollar, offering a modest exchange advantage. While not as budget-friendly as many Southeast Asian destinations, prices are generally in line with Bangkok.
In sum, Singapore deserves a perfect score. It exceeded my expectations and felt like a step into the future. My only regret is that the trip was so brief. I sincerely hope to return.
